We asked the dwellers of Kalviai, Dieveniskes and Saltiniai villages about the environment protection.
We asked them the following questions:
1. How does your family dispose home waste?
2. What do you know about recycling?
3. What would you like to change in the existing refuse collecting system?
4. Do you mind environmental issues?
5. What could you personally do to make your neighborhood cleaner and greener?
Sergey K.
1. We haven’t much rubbish. Mostly it is paper or plastic, so we burn all our home waste.
2. I know that most of the waste could be recycled. But I think, that in our village there’s no question of doing this.
3. It would be great to put recycling bins in all the villages.
4. Yes, I am very indignant with people, who put rubbish in forests or near rivers.
5. I don’t think that I could do something really important to make our neighborhood cleaner. The most of our village dwellers are indifferent to the nature protection; therefore the most effective way to stop environment pollution would be stricter fines for putting rubbish in the nature.
Feliksas S.
1. I haven’t much rubbish. I reuse them for home use.
2. I know that we should recycle. But I don’t do it.
3. Well it’s not topical for me.
4. Yes, because it damages my crops.
5. I don’t think I can change something.
Stase S.
1. Well, we burn some rubbish. We take the other out to the dumping ground.
2. We recycle our rubbish.
3. I wish that there was a refuse collector in our village.
4. Yes, I do. I really take care of the harm which is done by the transmission towers near our village.
5. I think we should less pollute our environment and induce others not to do it, too.
Vanda A.
1. We reuse our home waste or burn it.
2. We don’t recycle rubbish mostly.
3. This situation is rather good for us.
4. Yes, we do. I’m particularly interested in irradiation which is done by these transmission towers near the village.
5. There is anything we, old people, could to change.
Leokadija S.
1. Now there are containers by every house.
2. All I know, in other countries such as England or Germany people recycle rubbish. Unfortunately, only people in the biggest cities recycle rubbish in our country.
3. It would be great to sort rubbish. In addition, there could be containers for plastic, glass and paper in our village.
4. Yes, I do. I think that we all should be interested in it.
5. In towns and villages should be some organizations which clean our dirty lakes and collect rubbish in forests.
So the situation is really sad! Only one of the questioned people drops his rubbish into the container. Others just burn or get rid of it. Most know that they should recycle, but they don’t do that, because they haven’t possibility. Almost everyone wish that there would be containers in their villages. In this way they could collect and sort rubbish there. Everyone minds environmental issues. Two people think that there is anything they can do to make their neighbourhood cleaner or greener. In others opinion, there are some ways they can change present situation. For example, there could be established some clean-up organizations.
So what could be done to improve this situation?
First of all, there should be some changes in the refuse collection or waste disposal system. For example, the refuse collectors should take the rubbish from all villages in time.
Furthermore, there should be special containers for recycling in every living place.
And finally, people must be informed and educated about the necessity and importance of recycling.
